Choosing your Running Shoes – Analyze your feet

The first thing to do is to determine what kind of feet you have. We are all built differently and our feet are no exception to this. To find out what type of feet you have there are two parts to it.

The first part is known as the "wet foot test". This is a very simple test and used to determine what your foot looks like when you are standing. To carry out the test you need either a piece of paper or a dry tiled or wooden floor. Wet the bottom of your foot and stand firmly on the paper or floor. Have a look at the outline you have left.

Can you see the whole foot?, or are parts missing?

If you can see the whole foot, you are probably flat footed. If there is very little, or no, foot imprint between the toes and the heel that would indicate you have a high arch.

The second part to finding out your foot type is to ask a friend to record you running, paying attention to how your feet land on the ground. This is not easy and you need to slow the recording down.

Does your heel touch on the outside then roll in slightly? Or excessively? If slightly then you are said to be neutral, if excessively then you are said to over-pronate. If your heel strikes the ground on the inside and your foot then rolls outwards to become flat then this is called under-pronation or supinate.

This is all very subjective, so as a general guide to help you – people who are flat footed will normally be an over-pronator. People with a high arch will generally be under-pronators and people with normal foot will be neutral pronators.

If you are neutral, which most people are and most shoes will be ok. However you do not need ones with excessive stability or motion control or you may find your run a bit stiff.

To be certain which foot type you are some specialist sports stores have equipment and specially trained people to help you and test your feet. I would recommend getting this done if you are serious about running.
