Our bodies are 70% water, our blood is 83% water and our brain and muscle fibers are 75%. This makes our body mostly water. Throughout the day we lose water through natural waste, sweating and breathing. As we shall see water is essential to our health and it is vital we replace what we lose every day. If we do not we risk illness and eventually death. In fact without water we can only survive for three days at most.

How Much Water should we be drinking?

To get the health benefits of drinking water it is generally thought that the average person needs to drink 2 liters every day. This should exclude things like the coffee and tea you would normally drink. The reason being is that these are natural diuretics, so would you actually need to drink more water to replace any fluid lost by drinking coffee and tea. Two liters is around 8 250ml (8oz) glasses. This figure rises if you do exercise or are overweight. During exercise, especially if you are sweating quite a bit, you should drink 250ml for every 20 minutes you workout. If you are overweight one extra glass for every 20 pounds you are over your recommended weight is advised.

The figure of 2 litres is based on the average persons water loss throughout the day. This is 1.5 liters via urine and one liter via breathing, sweating and solid bowel movements. Food is generally thought to be around 20 percent of fluid intake leaving roughly 2 liters to be made up for.

There is a saying that if you feel thirsty you are already suffering the effects of mild dehydration. So try not to only drink when you are thirsty, but do it regularly throughout the day. Also keep an eye on the color of your urine. If you are well hydrated it should be pale or colorless. If it is dark it is a good sign that you need to drink more.

A piece of good advice is to try having a glass of water with every meal and at least one between meals. Have a glass before you go to bed at night to keep you body well hydrated when you are asleep. Have a glass when you wake up in the morning. In fact hot water and lemon work well here to kick start the system and get the metabolism going again. By following this pattern and repeating it daily you should not have any trouble in getting the amount of water you and your body need.

Can we drink too much water?

There are groups of people who should be wary of drinking too much water. For example those who take anti-diuretic medicine, which prevents the body excreting too much water. Marathon runners may take on too much fluid during a race in the mistaken belief that, that is what they need. Symptoms of too much water in the body include headache, confusion, and seizures and occasionally can lead to death. This is called Hydrocephalus and is fairly rare. If you are at all concerned talk to your medical / health professional who can recommend how much you should be drinking each day.

Some people who suffer from water retention could benefit from drinking more water. This is because when the body is seeing a lack of water come in, it will store it to protect against these lean times. This means that by not drinking enough you could be holding extra water you do not need and you may see evidence of this on the scales. Water retention can also be caused by too much Sodium (Salt) in the body. By drinking more you help to flush out this excess, thus preventing water retention.

Without water we are at risk of such things as constipation as there is not enough fluid to help clear out our body of the waste it produces.

Your body uses water to help to metabolize fat into energy, so if you do not drink enough this process slows down and you therefore retain more fat. Not a good thing if you are trying to lose weight.

The University of Washington found that water could help suppress hunger. The study participants were asked to drink a glass of water before bed and this reduced nighttime hunger cravings for those who were dieting.

Your brain has trouble distinguishing between hunger and thirst, so quite often when you feel hungry you could actually be thirsty. This is because the two elements in the brain that control hunger and thirst are next to each other and sometimes the wrong signal gets sent. Next time you feel hungry try this – drink a glass of water wait a few minutes and see if you still feel hungry. If you do then eat something, if you don't, then you were thirsty and your brain got it wrong.

Reason 3 – Fight Fatigue

Mild dehydration can make you feel tired as your body slows down its natural functions and toxins build up in your system. Try drinking more pure water to help flush out the toxins and rehydrate your cells. Guaranteed you will be more energetic following the recommended daily water amount than scoffing that chocolate bar or drinking that can of soda. Your body and your weight will thank you for it.

Water can help to plump up the skin cells, given it a firmer clearer look. This is great for older people as can help combat wrinkles.

Also as water helps to flush out the toxins from the body they are not given a chance to build up. This build up in the cells can make the skin look tired and grimy. By helping to remove the toxins the skin will once again be clear and healthy looking.

Water is needed to produce Lymph via the lymph nodes. This substance carries the immune cells to where they are needed to fight disease and infection. The waste of these is then flushed out of the system via the Kidneys by water.

Without enough water in the system this will simply not happen and your chances of winning the fight against infections will be greatly diminished.

Water is a key component for helping us to break down the food we eat and extracting all the good vitamins and minerals from it. Plus the protein, fiber, carbohydrate and fat. Water then makes up the blood, which carries these nutrients to where they are needed.

With a lack of water this process becomes very inefficient and food is eliminated before all the goodness is extracted. Also a number of the vitamins and minerals we need are water soluble. This makes it very important that they are sent to where they are needed as quickly as possible. If the process is delayed these vital vitamins and minerals will simply dissolve before we get a chnce to use them.

Muscles need a good supply of oxygen to keep them working well and not get tired, water helps to bring this to them. With a good hydration level in the body we can keep training for longer before the muscles get tired and cramp sets in.

Water is also essential to help your muscles contract, when this happens you get improved muscle tone. This makes you look good, fit and healthy.

If your brain is well hydrated it is able to circulate fresh, oxygen-laden blood more quickly and readily. This keeps the brain alert and active. The reason behind this is that the neurons within the brain rely on being kept well-nourished, so they can perform at their best. When this is the case your memory improves, you can concentrate for longer and work on complex problems all because you drank a glass of water!

The Kidneys are responsible for clearing the toxins from the body. By keeping your system well topped up with water you help flush the kidneys out expelling the toxins.

The job of the Liver is to filter the blood and keep it clean. It also helps to metabolize fat into energy.

When you are dehydrated the Liver helps the Kidneys to remove waste, this means that the Liver slows down its job and does not metabolize fat as quickly. What this means for you is that you will feel more tired and you weight loss will slow down and eventually stop.

Water can also help to prevent against Kidney Stones, as it dissolves Calcium and excretes it via the urine. This stops the Calcium from building up and creating the stones.

One of the symptoms of dehydration is a headache. So if you suffer from this, it could be that you just need to drink more water on a daily basis. The best way to do this is to keep a note of how much you drink each day for a week. At the end of this analyze the results and ask yourself – "Am I drinking 8 250ml Glasses each day?" If not you know what to do – start drinking plenty of water.

Water can also help to relieve back and joint pains. It lubricates the joints helping to keep them supple. When we are dehydrated the joints will become stiff and painful.

As we have seen drinking enough water is absolutely vital to good health. If you think you are not getting enough water try carrying a bottle of it in your bag when you go out. Take a drink from it regularly as you go about your daily business. If you feel like you may be dehydrated avoid drinks such as Tea, Caffeine, Soda and alcohol as all these are diuretics. Try to get your water in its purest form. If you find it boring try adding a slice of lemon or lime to it. If need be try a small amount of no-added-sugar squash. You could also install a water filtration system if you do not like the taste of tap water.

Water is the basis for almost every function in the body. For example it cleans the eyes, ears and nose, it forms the saliva in our mouths to help us swallow food, transports essential nutrients around the body, lubricates our joints, keeps us active, keeps us energized and so much more.
